The University of the Philippines Marketing Society Inc. held its 7th concert project with Urbandub, the fastest rising rock band from Cebu.
Urbandub or Udub, composed of lead vocalist Gabby Alipe, lead guitarist John Dinopol, bassist Lalay Lim, and drummer Janjan Mendoza, has traveled across the country and sold more than 10 000 albums. Headed by Paul Gonzaga, the event drew a crowd of more than 2500 people consisting mostly of students and young professionals all over Iloilo.
Urbandub has released four albums since its debut in 2000 namely Birth (2000), Influence (2003), Embrace (2005), and Under Southern Lights (2007). Since its beginning, the band has received awards from NU 107 Rock Awards which are the Best Song of the Year in 2003 (Soul Searching), Album of the Year in 2004 (Influence) and Vocalist of the Year in 2006 (Gabby Alipe).
The band played songs from their latest album, Under Southern Lights, which the members wrote themselves. It was named as such as a tribute to their hometown and for their families who serve as their “guiding light”. Urbandub was initially meant as a reggae band mixed with dub, but it has diversified to various genres: OPM, alternative rock, indie rock and experimental rock.
The MS Inc. gave the VIP treatment to the band from escorting the members to their hotel, Century 21, providing for their needs, and accompanying them to the airport the next day. At one point, the MS officers brought a chocolate cake for dessert which led Lalay Lim to comment jokingly “Nanliligaw ba kayo? Na-iinlove na tuloy kami.”
The main event was preceded by the Askal, Copula, Khamulang, Nail-scarred Hands, Mjah, and Diet of Wormz, all of which are Iloilo-based bands.
UPV MS Inc. partnered with Mang Inasal, Deco’s, Globe, Teletech, Panay News, and MOR ABS-CBN.
